Status loss refers to perceived evaluation of status diminution especially when an acquisition marginalizes a formerly high-status group. In a globalized context, status loss is often perceived when an on-site leader moves to another location. This work examines how individuals experience and respond to status loss. The empirical setting is a high-tech organization headquartered in Paris, France which operates in various countries across the globe. The company as a step towards globalization designated English as the lingua franca for cross-national communication in their internationally focused areas. Thus, middle and senior managers who routinely worked with colleagues in other countries experienced status loss for non-native English speakers. The research problem examines how and to what extent non-native speakers of a lingua franca perceive status loss, how non-native speakers of the English lingua franca respond and the differences in achieved fluency shape these responses.
