摘要

We demonstrate that strong, persistent refractive index gratings can be formed and erased using off-resonance ex- citation in Eu~3+-doped alkali silicate glass. The signal build-up time and the erasing results show that the grating growth and decay are faster for the smaller laser wavelengths. Fluorescence results indicate that Eu~3+ ions excited by the various off-resonance excitations occupy sites that differ from one another in local symmetry. Results from Raman scattering measurements show that the coupling between the electronic states of the excited Eu~3+ and the high-energy phonons become weaker as the laser wavelength increases.
