An adaptive photoacoustic image reconstruction technique that combines coherence factor (CF) weightingnand the minimum variance (MV) method is introduced. The backprojection method is widely used to reconnstruct photoacoustic tomography images. Owing to the scattering of light, the quality of the photoacoustinimaging can be degraded. CF, an adaptive weighting technique, is known to improve the lateral resolution onphotoacoustic images. In addition, an MV adaptive beamforming method can further improve the imagenquality by suppressing signals from off-axis directions. Experimental studies are performed to quantify thenspatial resolution and contrast of the adaptive photoacoustic beamforming methods. © 2008 Optical Societynof America
