It probably wasn't much of a surprise to the packaging sector that Sainsbury's didn't end up in court last month over accusations of excess packaging on a joint ofrnbeef. After all, an immense amountrnof work goes in to developing new packaging and retailers are at the heart of that work. But, once again, the spectre of packaging as an environmental problem caused headlines of the type the industry can well do without.rnAt the heart of the issue are the Packaging (Essential Requirements) Regulations. Sainsbury's would certainly have been a major scalp as there have, to date, only been a handful of cases where companies have been found to breach the rules. For a general public and media hostile towards packaging, the fact that the supermarket wasn't even tried begs the question over whether the regulations are actually working and what scope there m ight be for change.
