After two years of waiting, Alcan's packaging sell-offfinally began this month with the $1.2bn sale of its American food business to Bemis.rnThat Bemis bought the business will surprise no-one. Along with Amcor, in recent months it has been the only company in the running for Alcan's packaging division. The deal puts Bemisrnin a powerful position; once it completes, sales will jump around 40% to $5.3bn. There are only a handful of companies anywhere that can compete with that level of firepower.
