Co-mingled collections are a problem to all material sectors, not just glass. Talk to anyone at WAF (Waste Action Forum), the body that provides a link between local authorities and the true material recyling industries. Co-mingled collections suit waste management companies, who are not recyclers in the true meaning of the word, as it enables them to pile it high and sell it cheap where quantity rather than quality is the only measure. Unfortunately, for genuine recycling companies, quality is a must and the deferred landfill and sorting costs passed on by shoddy waste management practices have become a crippling burden.
