Has UK industry sufficient reserves of energy to make it on the world stage? The sombre reality is probably not. King Coal is dead and buried (the last remaining mine in operation closed a month ago), and the high-octane confidence fuelled by North Sea gas is a Thatcherite memory. Our power stations are way past their sell-by date, and our incipientJy nimby mind-set has largely immobilised the progress towards harnessing alternative sources to power derived from fossil fuel.
