The so-called 'granny tax', lunchtime pasties tax' and the ack of a caviar tax brought nuch displeasure to some in :his year's Budget. Some said it was a Budget driven by political, rather than practical, measures; others that it did little more that to tinker at the edges of the economy. But it was a Budget that the packaging industry was watching closely. First, there was the much-anticipated announcement of new, tough packaging recycling measures from Defra. Second was the question of whether it would be a Budget that was good for business, especially manufacturing businesses that make up so much of the packaging supply chain. While the recycling targets had been heavily trailed, the announcementthatthey would become law this year has still split opinions. By 2017, 57% of plastics will have to be recycled, compared to 32% now; 76% of steel will have to be recycled compared to 71 %now,and55% of aluminium will have to be recycled, compared to 40% now.
