The aim of contamination detection equipment is to prevent sub-standard product reaching the end user; which is why end ot line inspection is almost universal, especially in the food sector. But it makes sense to detect and remove contamination as early as possible in the production process to protect both the equipment and the bottom line. By the time a contaminated product reaches the end of the line not only have manufacturing costs been incurred, but there is a definite possibility that process equipment will have been dam- aged, resulting in increased maintenance costs and, potentially, lost production. In many processes, the most likely point at which contamination may be introduced is in delivered raw materials. A single piece of metallic contamination can cause serious damage as it moves through the process.
