In November 2007, the Philippines played host to the 28th Conference of the Federation of ASEAN Pulp & Paper Industry (FAPPI), which was held in Makati City, with the theme of "Unity Amidst Diversity". The two-day conference also saw the participation of Japan, Korea and Taiwan from the Asia Pulp & Paper Association (APPA). FAPPI's five-country membership comprises Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. Philippine President Gloria Maca-pagal-Arroyo, in her message in the conference's souvenir programme, commended the Pulp and Paper Manufacturers Association, Inc. (PULPA-PEL) for hosting the biennial conference and its valuable contribution to the country's economic transformation.
