Intelligent applications in the latter part of the last century focused on the representation of knowledge in one of two primary forms: the rule-based paradigm, started in the late 1970s by Bruce Buchanan and Edward Shortliffe with their development of Mycin, and artificial neural-networks first popularized by David Rumelhart and James McClelland.
