The phenomenon of overpressure in low-permeability Upper Cretaceous sandstone intervals is widespread in Rocky Mountain basins, including the Greater Green River Basin of southwestern Wyoming. This phenomenon is interpreted to be a direct result of gas generation in thick Cretaceous shales and in coal horizons and the migration of such gas into very low permeability reservoirs. Maturation of abundant source rock in the Upper Cretaceous section has caused long-term migration of ther-mpgenic gas into sandstones at a rate more rapid than that of gas escape. While there is some debate, at present, as to whether this overpressure in the Pinedale-Jonah area is consistent with a basin-centered gas accumulation model, there is no doubt whatsoever that it is a crucial determining factor for well productivity arid, therefore, commerciality. The distribution of overpressure in the northern Green River Basin i's complex and appears influenced by structure. Early observers of abnormal pressures in this area concluded that the phenomenon was imposed by tectonic compression (Rathburn, 1968). Later work, focusing on the regional nature of overpressure in the northern Green River Basin (Law et al., 1986), found that elevated pressure gradients existed in relatively unstressed portions of the basin and that gradients did not necessarily increase in more highly stressed areas. It is now generally believed, as noted above, that abnormal pressure has a non-tectonic origin. Nonetheless, it is also evident that structural influence of some kind does exist.
