The deepwater Nova Scotia slope has recently been confirmed as one of North America's most promising new frontier areas of major scale. This province is part of the transition from broad, shallow shelves along the Canadian Maritime Provinces to deepwater settings. Offshore drilling in this region reveals significant, if intermittent, exploratory interest over time, spurred in part by two major areas of discovery. The Hibernia discovery (1979; reserves = 884 million bbls; production began 1997) on the Grand Banks, offshore Newfoundland, was the first to prove major hydrocarbon pros-pectivity along this margin, and led to subsequent nearby finds at such fields as Terra Nova, Hebron and Whiterose. Interest also expanded to other parts of the margin, with success offshore Nova Scotia, near Sable Island. Continued exploration in this offshore area has now opened a world-class oil and gas province extending from shallow shelf to deep-water environments.
