摘要

The North Slope of Alaska is among the best places on Earth to explore and test gas hydrates for possible economic production. Hydrates are known to be widespread in this region at shallow levels, to be concentrated in identified units, and to exist above a free-gas zone in permeable sediments. Several decades of drilling and oil development, meanwhile, have led to an excellent understanding of reeional and local geology, as well as to the development of a large-scale network of infrastructure. Abundant control wells (>50) for hydrate occurrence are known, such that the limits of such occurrence can be mapped or predicted with relative accuracy. Moreover, there is motive to develop new gas resources: companies now engaged in enhanced recovery operations for conventional reservoirs on the North Slope are currently utilizing miscible gas flooding and re-pres-surization through gas injection.
