The major thickness of sedimentary strata in the Greater Green River Basin (GGRB)―and by far the dominant hydrocarbon source and reservoir section―exists in rocks of Cretaceous age. These rocks comprise up to 15,000 ft of marine, transitional and non-marine strata, with multiple sandstone-bearing intervals and abundant, source-quality shales. A correlation chart for Cretaceous deposits in the GGRB is shown in Fig. 3.1. In general, Cretaceous sandstone-bearing strata represent periods of regression during which fluvial/deltaic and related deposi-tional systems prograded from west to east or―in a few cases (e.g. Muddy/Upper Dakota)―south to north, into a major marine basin or seaway. Shoreline facies record the advance and retreat of these systems across the region. Marine facies dominate in the central portions of the GGRB, except along the Rock Springs Uplift, which acted as an intermittent high, the crest and flanks of which were the site of more transitional and non-marine depositional settings.
