Major basins of the Rocky Mountain region have been the targets of both sporadic and systematic exploration since the early years of the 20th century. Such exploration has tended to occur in waves, following the discovery of a new reservoir, production from a new structural or stratigraphic setting, technological advance, strong price increase, or some combination of these. Despite long-term drilling by major and independent companies, however, there exists the consensus among experts that the region―in whole and in some parts―remains under-evaluated. Such is especially true for a few basins in particular, most notable among them the Greater Green River Basin (GGRB) of southwestern Wyoming (Fig. 1.1). The need for continued prospecting in the GGRB has been highlighted by at least three important areas of work. These include new assessments of the basin's regional potential, new drilling and development successes, and new research into approaches for improved recovery.
