Anthracite: A Potentially Significant Producer of Coalbed Methane

Until the last several years, coal of anthracite frank was not believed to be an attractive target for coalbed methane exploration. Reasons for negative arguments include the commonly held perception that (1} because anthracitization results from high temperatures, any remaining volatile constituents should have been "cooked" out of the coalbed reservoir; and (2) anthracites often lack cleating and exhibit other attributes that result in very low permeability. However, anthracite often is very brittle, can exhibit excellent cleating, and is known to develop reasonably good permeability. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that this very high rank coal is characterized by extremely high sorption capacities and can act as a very efficient "sponge" that is able to store methane that originated from nearby sources, including secondary biogenic gases. Published examples of measured (desorbed) gas contents in anthracite deposits in North America are as high as 500-600 standard cubic feet per short ton (scf/st). Elsewhere, gas contents have been measured in South Wales (U.K.) at more than 800 scf/st, in northwestern Germany at nearly 800 scf/st, and in China (Shanxi Province) as high as 1367 scf/st. In northeastern Pennsylvania, a test well drilled in the Anthracite Region in the mid-1970s flowed 85 Mcf/d (unstimulated) from a bed below 1,500 ft. In the Jincheng coal-mining district in southeastern Shanxi Province, China, commercial rates of coalbed methane production are being tested from several wells. Other anthracite deposits that may warrant exploration include those in north-central British Columbia, South Wales and the Asturias region of northern Spain.
