Deepwater development will be playing an important role in future energy scenario due to larger reserves and higher productivity wells, despite high risk and costs. This will be made possible by using innovative, cost effective and reliable technological solutions in addition to effective management systems. Deepwater development planning must ensure that the facilities designed should deliver the required business performance or exceed them once in production. Proper attention should be given to logistics, intervention and repair techniques in case of subsea tiebacks. All factors that influence performance and operations must be considered at the design planning stage as it has a major influence on future business performance and operations. Deepsea field development is a complex endeavour and its success is dependent on the skills of people involved, their experience on past projects and interaction with others in a multidisciplinary team to work towards a common goal. Close links between the surface and subsurface teams developing the project and future operations is a must. Most operating companies prefer proven concepts/tech-' nologies to reduce risk and follow a path of fast track development with high reliability. However, new technologies offer a potential for huge cost savings. This requires a combination of proactive and reactive approaches in addition, using advanced available techniques to optimise the design and operation of field development.
