For new technology to succeed, it sometimes has to turn the old technology inside out. That''s what happened—literally—when Tampella Power Inc. developed its new TUBEL™ evaporator technology, used in falling film concentrators and evaporators in the pulp mill chemical recovery cycle. All evaporators remove water from black liquor by heating it to raise the solids level of the liquor. However, in the TUBEL design, the falling black liquor film is on the outside of the evaporator tubes, unlike traditional falling film concentrators where the film is inside the tubes. Aside from other benefits, this means that in TUBEL evaporators tube pluggage can never occur—even during major process disturbances.
