The shale revolution has taken America by storm and we are still in the early stages, but the process was never easy. In a way, it harkens back to the days of old when some oilmen, called wildcatters, were willing to risk it all in hopes of a big payoff. People like the late George P. Mitchell, the Texas oilman who is considered the father of hydraulic fracturing, the technology that has produced the shale revolution, along with the attending controversy that surrounds the drilling practice. A well-written, informative and entertaining new book documents the efforts of Mitchell and others in helping reverse the nation's energy decline that just a few years ago could not have seemed bleaker. Today, an abundance of domestic crude oil and natural gas derived from unconventional sources has pushed the United States to the top of the world's energy leaderboard.
