When a compressor seal fails in a pipeline environment, the maintenance specialist must return the compressor to operation as soon as possible. But it is also true that, where possible, the maintenance person needs to determine the root cause of the failure. More often than not, seals fail because of their environment, including gas composition, and their interaction with other components. Replacement without understanding the cause of the failure can lead to another failure.
