Due to their operational and financial benefits, there is increasing number of flexible risers for offshore oil and gas exploration facilities, often in combination with floating-production systems. While flexible pipe is in general considered 'piggable', cleaning tools with carbon-steel brushes and ILI tools can potentially damage the inner carcass layer. On top of this, ferritic particles can remain behind in the stainless steel carcass which can, in the end lead, to corrosion of the inner carcass layer, as it is usually made from stainless steel AISI 304 or 316. Rosen recently completed a project on several Total E&P Congo offshore oil pipelines, demonstrating the appropriate methods for inspecting flexible pipes without causing internal damage.
