摘要

As I read Jeff Berlin's editorial ["GA Popularity Contest," January 2008], which bemoaned general aviation's unpopularity, I reflected on the various reactions I've gotten from people who learn that I'm a pilot. I find that most people are curious and fascinated. At the same time, however, they seem to express a belief that flying is something unattainable for them. I think this belief can be attributed to the demands of two realities: work and family. For most people with the means to pursue a pilot's license, work occupies them five days a week. And family leaves no free time for the pursuit of such a hobby. I became hooked on flying after graduating from college but before taking on the demands and responsibilities of a family. Had I waited, I seriously doubt that I would have pursued what has turned into a lifelong passion. Recruiting efforts for future pilots should focus on people between the ages of 22 and 30.
