When was the last time you flew somewhere and had to divert? If you're like me, you'll have to strain the old grey matter to remember. Point is, diversions aren't a common occurrence. Ideally, good cross-country planning precludes the need to reroute flights. Yet there are times when a deviation from the original flight plan becomes essential to safety. And because diversions are done on such rare occasions, pilots tend to have trouble managing them. Worse, they choose to press on into danger.
