... AES Corp. August 7 reported second-quarter net income of $903 million, up 255.5% from a year before, thanks mainly to the gain on the May 30 sale of the AES Ekibastuz power plant and Maikuben coal mine in Kazakhstan to Kazakhmys PLC for gross proceeds of $1,1 billion. The $903 million was the biggest amount of Q2 2008 profit, and the $649 million increase was the biggest profit gain, reported by any company in the power sector through August 7. The sale resulted in a profit of $1.13/diluted share or about $784 million, reduced by about $145.7 million of taxes, for a net gain of about $638 million. At the Ipalco Enterprises unit, however, net income sagged 68.8% to $9.4 million, on revenue of $267.3 million, up 3.4%, as net dropped 29.5% to $28.6 million at utility Indianapolis Power & Light, on lower power sales and higher fuel, purchased power, and operating costs.
