With a renewable energy request for proposals issued last week, Dayton Power & Light looks to begin building a portfolio of environmentally benign resources. The DPL subsidiary "does not currently have any renewables in its portfolio," said company spokesman Tom Tatham. Of DP&L's approximately 3,700 MW of generation capacity, coal represents about 2,850 MW with peaking units fueled by natural gas and diesel comprising the rest. That could start to change if the regulated Ohio utility is satisfied with proposals it receives for a minimum of 38,000 MWh of renewable energy resources by the end of 2009. Of that total, 625 MWh is to include solar photovoltaic or solar thermal energy. September 12 is the deadline for submitting bids.
