Propelled in part by "changing economic conditions," Northern Indiana Public Service is proposing to roll out new energy efficiency programs next year that could save nearly 60 MW, a demand reduction of 1.7%, by the summer of 2012. In its filing last week, the NiSource subsidiary told the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission it will implement seven demand-side management programs within 90 days of IURC approval (Cause No. 43618). It is unclear when the commission will issue a final order. Nipsco spokesman Nick Meyer said the proposal grew out of the utility's 2007 integrated resource plan. In testimony submitted to the commission, Frank Shambo, vice president of regulatory and legislative affairs for the Merrillville-based utility, said the proposal reflects Nipsco's adaptation to changing economic conditions. "Although Nipsco did not forsee the economic turmoil that exists in the global marketplace today and the associated recession, its proposal in this proceeding is timely and can introduce an immediate opportunity for customers to manage energy costs," he said.
