In a world-first AFC Energy has recharged an electric vehicle using a hydrogen fuel cell, the UK developer said January 17. The achievement is significant because, unlike conventional plugin recharging, fuel cell-based recharging has the potential to reduce peaks in electricity demand and ensure 100% clean electricity if green hydrogen is used as the fuel cell feedstock. “AFC Energy is preparing for the commercialisation of fuel cellbased EV charge solutions to meet the growing demand for environmentally friendly power in the EV market. Traditional charging causes pollution with electricity from fossil fuels, but AFC Energy’s system can be 100% emissions free,” it said. By 2030 there could be nine million electric vehicles on UK roads up from 90,000 today, said AFC Energy CEO Adam Bond. “We need charging stations to be embedded throughout the country, as well as seeking innovative solutions to overcome the severe limitations of centrally generated electricity,” he said.
