Wind power generation across Europe’s five largest power markets fell for a third month in a row in January, trailing Jan. 2020 by almost 4 TWh. Wind output of 30.1 TWh was 11% below January 2020 despite Spain and Italy registered significant gains, TSO data showed. In sharp contrast to last winter, calm and cold weather dominated Northwest Europe, while storm systems moved across Southern Europe. Spanish wind had its best ever two-month period in December and January, setting a new peak record at 19.6 GW. By contrast, wind generation in Germany and Great Britain over the two months trailed by 11 TWh. French wind output was flat on year in January balanced by both weather systems. France also set a new national record Jan. 21 exceeding 14 GW for the first time. Jan. 21 also marked a new European wind record with 2.75 TWh generated over the 24 hours averaging 115 GW with peaks of 121 GW exceeding the previous record set last February. Solar generation of 3.1 TWh was 19% lower on year. Combined wind/solar across the five markets was down 12% on year. November registered the first on year decline in almost two years as capacity gains and weather conditions pushed renewables output to continued records. Installed wind and solar capacity across the five market has risen above 250 GW led by Germany and Spain, combined adding over 10 GW in 2020 as Europe’s biggest and fastest growing renewable markets.
