Storegga Geotechnologies, the developer of the Acorn carbon capture and storage project in the UK, hopes to take the final investment decision for its first phase in 2022 and begin storing CO2 by the end of 2024 or early 2025, its CEO Nick Cooper told S&P Global Platts in an interview. Acorn - which Cooper said is the most advanced CCS project in the UK - could ultimately store up to 20 million mt/year of CO2 in mostly depleted offshore hydrocarbon fields. CCS is considered a key part of the rapidly evolving energy transition narrative, allowing for CO2 emissions from a wide range of sources to be safely stored to mitigate its impact on climate change.
