A consortium including marine engineering firm Wartsila is to launch a commercially viable autonomous battery-powered container shuttle to address emerging capacity bottlenecks at the Port of Rotterdam, Wartsila said May 27. “We believe that overland transport modes will not be able to absorb the emerging capacity bottleneck for internal container movement,” Hendrik Busshoff, Business Development Engineer at Wartsila Voyage, said in a statement. The barges will be emissions-free and electric, using an electric drive chain and interchangeable batteries charged using renewable power.
