French utility EDF has dropped a plan to convert its 1.2 GW coal-fired power plant at Cordemais to biomass, the utility said July 8. Withdrawal of an unnamed partner resulting in a commissioning delay to 2024 was given as the main reason for the abandonment. The delay closed a window of opportunity for the “Ecocombust” project to supply during what is seen as a vulnerable period for regional supply security. The high cost of the project was also seen as a barrier to progress. “The Cordemais power station will continue to meet the needs of the electricity system expressed by RTE, in compliance with the energy law and in particular the provisions of the climate law,” EDF said in a statement.
