Greece’s booming gas-fired generation sector had another strong month in June with output up 50% year on year, according to data from market operator Hellenic Energy Exchange SA. Gas-fired generation in Greece has largely displaced the country’s lignite generation sector, once a dominant source but now heading for phase-out in 2023. June gas generation increased in response to rising electricity demand, up 12.5% year on year on strong domestic consumption and a small dip in renewables output. Bullish gas and still-high carbon prices meanwhile saw average system spot baseload prices in June increase 32% month on month at Eur83.47/MWh ($98.23/MWh). This time last year Greek spot prices averaged just Eur34.05/MWh.
