E.ON plans to increase its Italian wind capacity from 280 MW to 340 MW by 2011, and accelerate expansion of its solar photovoltaic portfolio. Speaking during a sustainable energy conference in Terni on June 30, Klaus Schafer, CEO of E.ON Italia, said the company, which operates a 1.4 MW PV plant at Fiume Santo (Sardinia), aims to reach 80 MW of PV capacity by 2011. The German utility has also scheduled an overhaul of around 800-MW of thermal capacity. Its fuel oil unit at Ostiglia, Lombardy will be replaced by two new high-efficiency gas turbines of 100 MW each. At Fiume Santo meanwhile a new 410-MW coal unit will replace two fuel oil units. Finally, E.ON's turbo gas power plant in Trapani, Sicily will be renovated.
