Increasing energy demand combined with problems ovei Russian gas deliveries and a stretch of below-freezing temperatures have combined to create an uncommon unity over additional hydro power among political factions. The first signal is decision of the federal environmental senate approving two long-proposed smaller plants in Styria below Graz on the Mur river. These are now expected to be in service in 2012 at Gossendorf and Kahlsdorf, each with about 18.5-MW and combined annual output of 166 GWh.rnEnergie Steiermark is to invest €155 million in the facilities with €20 million allocated for environmental aspects to include flood protection. "To date no other hydro plant in Austria has included such extensive ecological measures," says a company spokesman, citing these as a likely reason why the environmental senate rejected all of the objections of various environmental groups.
