German suppliers offer "green" electricity products not because they wish to support renewables but because it offers an opportunity to "bind in customers," a survey by Trend Research shows. The company interviewed more than 70 energy suppliers, green electricity traders and producers in Germany and reports that 52% were offering "green" products as a means of increasing customer loyalty. About 21% of the companies also cited "improving their image". Only 3% said the incentive was to support the growth of renewables. Cheap supplies of green power are generally sourced from old, long depreciated hydro power stations.
