The Leipzig-based European Energy Exchange plans to expand through cooperation with continental European energy bourses beyond its current agreement with French exchange Powernext, EEX's chief executive Hans-Bernd Menzel told Platts in an interview in London June 11. EEX is talking with potential partners in continental Europe and that "more exchanges" [in addition to French Powemext] will join us," Menzel said. EEX and Powernext plan to set up a 50:50 joint venture European spot power exchange company in Paris beginning September 30, and an 80:20 joint venture European power derivatives exchange company in Leipzig. Starting April 2009, all trades on both exchanges are planned be cleared and settled by EEX subsidiary European Commodity Clearing.
