The Italian government hopes that the procedures and methodology for identifying a site for storing nuclear waste will be settled by the end of September, it has said. It wants to name the site's location by the end of the year.rnHowever, a commission that includes heads of environment of regional authorities, the government itself and ENEA, the national agency for new technologies, energy and the environment, has so farrnbeen unsuccessful in its attempts to reach agreement on what the procedures and methodology should be. The government may decide unilaterally should the commission fail to agree.rnNo region wants the site within its boundaries and all are giving reasons why they should not be chosen. For example, Puglia, the region that forms the heel of the Italian boot, argues that it is a major producer of electricity and that it exports more than three quarters of what it produces to other regions.
