Copper treatment and refining chargesnhave been drifting higher in recentnmonths, with spot deals reported tonbe settling around $70/mt and 7￠lb in Europe, up from $50/mt and 5￠lb early in the year, according to NatixisnCommodities Markets in its Q4 metalsnreview. This correlates with a recentnreview of the market by European producernAurubis. TC/RCs are the chargesnproducers pay smelters to turn concentrateninto cathode. Natixis noted that thisnis above benchmark levels of $63.50mt and 6.35￠/lb, “suggesting a gradualnimprovement in the availability of coppernores and concentrates.” The commoditiesnbroker said that in China, spot TCRCs have risen to the highest levelsnthis year at $65/mt and 6.5￠/lb, “andnare expected to rise further in 2013nas Turquoise Hill comes onstream.”nTurquoise Hill, previously called Ivanhoe,npart owns with Rio Tinto and the governmentnof Mongolia the world’s largestnundeveloped copper-gold project, OyunTolgoi, with forecast average annualnproduction of 450,000 mt of copper.n“In recent years, TC/RCs have been anpotent indicator of future price trends,nand rising TC/RCs would be a clear signnthat copper prices are unlikely to pushnback up to recent highs even if globalndemand does improve in 2013,” Natixisnsaid. The company forecast average coppernprices of $8,350/mt in Q4 2012,ngiving an average price for the year as anwhole of $8,055/mt.
