Decarbonising heat from off gas grid homes is a complex challenge but one that has been identified as an early policy priority. Rural properties tend to be older and less well insulated so many are unsuited to heat pumps – the technology favoured by governments for off-grid homes – without significant investment. This is in addition to the high installation costs of heat pumps.
