The Prospects For Brown's Social Democracy

This special issue of Policy Studies has presented an interim evaluation of the Brown government organised around four key themes: an assessment of the Blair legacy; an evaluation of continuities and discontinuities between the Blair and Brown administrations; the identification of Brown's governing dilemmas in different policy arenas; and, the implications of the management of these dilemmas for future governance. The purpose of this conclusion is not to reiterate the main arguments set out by colleagues but to provide an understanding of the future prospects for Brown's social democracy in government. This will be achieved in two ways. Firstly, an evaluation of the challenges confronting the Brown government in the remainder of this term will be presented. Secondly, the opposition projects of the Conservative Party under David Cameron and the Liberal Democrats under Nick Clegg are considered and their threat to New Labour's politics of dominance is assessed (Beech 2008). This discussion takes place at a time when several political scientists (see Kalitowski 2008) are predicting that the next general election will result in a hung parliament and is likely to be the closest contest in recent memory. In consequence, we will assess whether Gordon Brown's social democracy will survive or whether it will merely be integrated into a new politics of dominance under Cameron's Conservatives.
