The arrival of private security companies aboard vessels moving through the dangerous waters of the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean has had a decisive effect on the level of piracy in the region. But while Somali piracy may now be in terminal decline, Dr Dave Sloggett told P&H, the shipping industry is turning its attention to the perennial problem of piracy inside territorial waters. The pattern of piracy attacks around the world shifted in 2012. It is a pattern that is being repeated at the start of 2013 and those vessels most vulnerable are those at anchorage, Sloggett asserted. On 14 March this year at 04.02 at Adang Bay 25nm SSW of Balikpapan Port in Indonesia, three robbers armed with long knives boarded a bulk carrier. As soon as the duty officer sounded the foghorn to assemble the crew the robbers fled the scene.
