Construction of the series of two diversion-type Lower Cherek hydroelectric power plants each with a rated capacity of 60 MW has been in progress since 1992 in conformity with the "Program for the development of an electric-power base in the Kabardino-Balkar Republic in the period to 2010" and the Federal Goal Program "Fuel and energy." Construction of basic structures of the lower hydroelectric plant in the Aushigersk series on the Cherek River was begun in 1994. More than 85% of the excavation volume, approximately 80% of the fill volume, and about 75% of the volume of concrete work had been completed on the Aushigersk hydroelectric power plant by the start of 2000; the metallic conduit and spiral cases of the generating sets have been assembled in the powerhouse. Construction of the open diversion is now basically complete.
