Causes of Dam Repair. A significant part of dams, like the other structures that are component parts of hydroprojects, require repair and/or reconstruction. Processes resulting in appreciable changes in the state and properties of soils in the foundation bed and in various elements of dams, and their unacceptable deformations, which give rise to the need for repair of water-development works, may be subdivided into two groups (Table 1). Natural processes, which are manifested under extremal conditions, for example, during floods, the probability of the passage of which is lower than the calculated value, or during earthquakes with an intensity not previously noted in the region in question are classed with the first group. Processes of technogenic origin, which develop as a result of the force and chemical effects of water and filtration, as well as manifestations of compression, shear, or tension in the foundation, abutments, or in the body of the structure belong to the second group. Processes resulting from military and terrorist activities, and also sabotage, are also classed with this group.
