Landslide-prone natural and man-made rock slopes have long captured the attention of researchers and specialists involved in the planning and construction of various installations, including hydraulic structures, because underestimation of the possibility of slides and cave-ins often leads to tragic consequences at various levels. The buildup of rockslides is attributable to a great many different combinations of factors, and the relative significance of each is not something that can always be established. The classification of factors is more or less a conditional division in that frequently a fine demarcation does not exist between them. Different factors require different approaches to their quantitative assessment and to the development of reinforcement measures. The knowledge of these factors is essential to understanding the causes and mechanisms underlying the buildup of landslides, i.e., such knowledge is the basic raw material for the modeling of unstable masses.
