Ofgem's CEO Alistair Buchanan was grilled by members of parliament this month as part of an ongoing inquiry into energy retail issues. On June 17, MPs asked first why Ofgem had changed its mind on the need to investigate the market. On January 16 at a meeting with finance minister Alistair Darling Ofgem had said the market was working well. Then on February 21 the regulator announced - shortly after the MPs had initiated their inquiry - that Ofgem would hold a probe into the market. Buchanan said this was not inconsistent. The market had changed from January to February. Centrica announced a price hike January 18, Scottish Power and E.ON UK in early February.
