Scottish and Southern Energy has reported a near 14% hike in profits thanks to increasing generation margins. Margins for coal and gas plant had improved somewhat in recent months (although they remained below new entrant levels), CEO Ian Marchant said in a conference call, but there were no margins to speak of in retail. SSE reported adjusted profit before tax for the year to March 31, 2008 at ￡1.229 billion, up 13.9%, on revenue of ￡15.256 billion, up from ￡11.867 billion. Investment was up 22.1% to ￡810 million. Gas power station availability was stable at 95%, coal plant availability at 91%, down 1%.
