The UK government's plan to band the Renewables Obligation is being seen as both a threat and an opportunity for many involved in the renewables sector. Many windfarm developers are concerned that onshore projects will receive a lower subsidy and the threat of uncertinaty has halted many in their tracks (see other story). Others are hoping that banding will provide a much needed kickstart to other kinds of renewable technologies that have languished in the wake of onshore windfarm growth. Some argue that increased renewables diversity will help meet other UK energy policy objectives. In the following article, Campbell Dunford1 argues that a renewable technology's impact on security of supply should also been factored into the equation.
