UK environment secretary David Miliband this month defended emissions trading as a mechanism to tackle climate change, and stressed the importance of more countries adopting similar measures. "Our compliance with the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) has been excellent and is worth some 65 million tons of CO_2 in 2005 to 2007. Phase 2 [2008-2012] is set to deliver an additional 29 million tons of carbon reduction every year," he told the UK parliament in a House of Commons question session on the morning of May 17.
