EDF Energy is looking at restructuring its gas portfolio to ensure that it has better access to gas for its retail business and planned gas-fired stations. At an investor briefing at the end of last month, the company said that it is looking at building more gas-fired capacity in the UK and structuring its gas procurement policy along the following lines: procure 30% of its gas needs at a fixed price, 50% at indexed prices and the remaining 20% left in an open position. Analysts at BNP Paribas report that the company is "horribly exposed" to wholesale gas market volatility although in electricity the company currently has a good balance between its residential/SME customer base and its own generation.
